pebbles, granules, lithology, dispersal trains, provenance, erratic
The lithology of the pebble or granule fraction of
till can be used to define the distribution of indicator erratics. Lithologically
distinctive erratics can provide important information for mapping glacial
dispersal trains, identifying glacial transport direction, establishing
glacial stratigraphy, and determining the provenance of economic minerals.
The method developed by Consorminex for counting pebbles
is designed to provide a maximum of information and flexibility. The pebble
classification and counting method to be used, is discussed with the client.
Once the lithological classes are separated, each class is placed in a
separate " zip-lock " bag and labelled. This allows the client to verify
the count, weigh the classes if percent weight rather than percent number
data is preferred, and further divide classes into more detailed lithology.
Before placing the samples into bags, a photograph can be taken of the
sample. These slides or photos can than be transferred to a compact disk.
